About SPPADA

SPPADA supports the spiritual and developmental growth of its community in Namugongo, Uganda.

St. John Paul II Sub-Parish Development Association (SPPADA) is dedicated to enhancing the lives of Catholics in Namugongo, Uganda, through faith-driven initiatives. Our programs focus on personal growth, community involvement, and the promotion of Catholic values, inspired by the teachings of St. John Paul II. We strive to create an inclusive environment where members can flourish spiritually and socially.

We are a dedicated Catholic community focused on growth and support.

At SPPADA, we believe in the power of community and faith. Our association initiates various programs aimed at uplifting the spiritual and developmental needs of our members. We provide opportunities for personal growth, mutual support, and engagement in activities that reflect our commitment to Catholic teachings. Whether through workshops, outreach initiatives, or spiritual retreats, we foster a culture of community involvement and service.

SPPADA promotes Catholic teachings through engaging initiatives and community programs.

The objectives of SPPADA are

  1. To promote the spiritual, moral and material welfare of members
  2. To promote the development of the Catholic community in the Sub-Parish.
  3. To emulate the life of St. John Paul II as evident in his obedience to God, loyalty and service to the Catholic Church and commitment to his work.
  4. To contribute to the growth of the Catholic Church
  5. Helping all Catholics to return to Christ, to his Church and to the sacraments through working together as fathers and mothers to mend broken homes and families.
  6. To encourage and promote a spirit of sharing experiences, being material, moral or spiritual;
  7. To promote good Christian life in our various families through the word of God
  8.  To defend the doctrine of the Catholic Church against all forms of profanation from within and without by standing firm in our faith.
  9. To strengthen our faith and that of our family members in God through reading the Bible, discussions, prayers and good works.
  10. To bring together all the Catholics of St. John Paul II Sub-Parish.
  11. To foster relations with other Christian Associations with similar objectives.
  12. To help encourage developmental activities in the Sub-parish for the individual members and for the church.
  13. To promote evangelization in all forms, retreats, visits to the sick, prisoners, comrades and pilgrimages.
  14. To contribute to the Ecumenical movement through exemplary moral and Christian living that permeates society.

The association was founded by the Catholics of St. John Paul II Sub-Parish in Namugongo Catholic Parish as promoters of the Association. Membership of the association is open to all baptized Catholics regardless of race, colour, tribe and ethnicity who are over the age of 18, single or married residing and living in St-John Paul II Sub-Parish. Confirmation of membership is upon completion of a probationary period of at least one year during which such a member would have shown the dedication and commitment to subscribe to the principles and regulations of the Association.

OUR MEMBERSHIP FEES

Registration fee for membership is as follows

  1. Children below the age of 18 years shall pay a membership fee of UGX 5,000 and a monthly subscription fee of UGX 5,000
  2. Youth between the age of 18-35 shall pay a membership fee of UGX 10,000 and a monthly subscription fee of UGX 5,000
  3. Marrieds, Single Men and women aged between 35-75 years shall pay membership fee of UGX 50,000 and a monthly subscription fee of UGX 20,000
  4.  The elderly aged 75 years of age and above shall pay a membership fee of UGX 20,000 and monthly subscription of UGX 10,000
  5. Membership fees shall be payable once.
  6. The amount to be paid as membership and subscription fees shall be revised by the members in the General Assembly as members may deem it necessary.

ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP

Active membership entails monthly subscription fee and regular attendance of association meetings (at least one meeting a month) as well as honouring of financial obligations as determined by the General Assembly.

LOSS OF MEMBERSHIP

Membership in the Association is lost in any of the following ways;

  1. DEATH. The death of a member shall put a natural end to his membership in the Association. However, the Association will settle all matters with the next of kin including handling savings of the deceased member, clearing debts for the association among others after which the file will be closed.  
  2. TRANSFER; The transfer of a member out of the Sub-Parish shall put an end to his membership, except if such a member desires to keep his membership with all the obligations imposed by the constitution
  3. WITHDRAWAL; Membership shall come to an end in case of a deliberate withdrawal of a member. In such a situation, he/she explicitly expresses his/her decision in the last meeting of attendance in writing.
  4. UNJUSTIFIED ABSENCES; The General assembly shall decide to terminate the membership of a non-active member (missing meetings, subscriptions among others.
  5. CHANGE OF RELIGION; When a member changes religion from Catholic to another, he/she shall lose membership in the Association.

REGAINING LOST MEMBERSHIP

A member who loses his membership through transfer will when transferred back to the Sub-Parish, re-apply and regain membership upon resuming his/her responsibilities in the Association. The Executive Committee decides whether or not to accept such member back to the Association. A former member may regain his/her membership after due consideration by the General Assembly.

RELATIONS WITH OTHER SUB-CATHOLIC PARISHES

The Association shall participate in all approved activities organized by other Catholic Lay Movements in the Sub-parish in particular and the Parish in general.

RIGHTS OF MEMBERS

All members of the association enjoy equal and inalienable rights such as

  1. To vote and to be voted for on the principle of one member, one vote
  2. Have equal participatory rights in all Associations activities,
  3. Be free to express their opinions on Catholic doctrine.
  4. Be entitled to any form of assistance from members within.
  5. Have equal rights to serve the Association in a representative capacity.
  6. Right to access books of Accounts following the prescribed procedures set by the Association
  7. Other rights as may be approved by the General Assembly

DUTIES OF MEMBERS

All members of the association have duties that include but not limited to;

  1. Attending mass every second Sunday of the month
  2. Regularly attending meetings and respecting punctuality.
  3. Performing assigned work both for the Association and Sub-Parish.
  4. Preserving confidential matters within.
  5. Protecting the Constitution and keeping matters of the Association Confidential
  6. Respecting leaders and members of the Association
  7. Payment of membership fees

Payment of monthly subscription fees as shall be agreed amongst members

Other duties as may be approved by the General Assembly

The main organs of the Association are

  1. The General Assembly
  2. The Central Execute Committee.
  3. Management

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The General Assembly

  1. Comprise of all the registered members of the Association;
  2. Is presided over by the President elected.
  3. Is the highest organ and supreme authority of the Association;
  4. Lays down the principles and policies of the Association;
  5. Elect the Executive committee;
  6. Take all major decisions with at least (2/3) two thirds of the registered members in attendance.
  7. Meet twice a year in June and December

THE CENTRAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

The Central Executive committee

  1.  Ensures the implementation of the decisions and resolutions of the Association
  2. Carry out any special duty assigned to it by the General Assembly.
  3. Preside over the elections of all other committees that may be created by the Association
  4. Study and propose Development activities to the General Assembly.

  1. The Association is managed by the Central Executive Committee which from time to time, appoint the Coordinator of the Association.
  2. The Central Executive Committee is responsible for the appointment of all the staff of the Association.
  3. The Coordinator is responsible for all management functions of the association including Planning, Organizing, Staffing, Directing, Coordinating Reporting and Budgeting.

The Association derives its funds from the following sources;

  1. Membership fees
  2. Monthly subscription fees
  3. Annual contributions
  4. Sponsorships
  5. Grants, Donations and gifts
  6. Proceeds from fund raising activities such as Tea- Parties in the Sub-parish.
  7. Income generated from development initiatives of the association
  8. Loans from other development partners like banks, SACCOs and other financial institutions

OUR SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

The Association promote a spirit of solidarity amongst members through planning and organizations of social activities and events like retreats, tours, trainings, conferences among others that are used as avenues for promoting solidarity among the members. Activities and events held in the spirit of unity and reflect the Internal Rules and Regulations of the association.

THE CREDIT SCHEME

The Association operates and manages a credit scheme to enable members of the association get finances for income generating activities.  The credit scheme has a loans committee which approves all loans to be given to interested members of the Association. The loans committee in consultation with the Executive Committee develops regulations/policies/guidelines/rules to govern the Credit Scheme. The rules and regulations governing the credit scheme are developed, discussed and adopted by the members of the credit scheme during the member’s assembly.

SOCIAL/WELFARE FUND

The Association operates a Social/Welfare fund which provide assistance to members during happy and unhappy events as approved by the General Assembly. Participation in happy and unhappy events by members is obligatory. Happy events include

  1. Church weddings of the members
  2. Thanks giving of members
  3. Retreats, pilgrimages or any spiritual ceremony by the association
  4. Participation in activities of the parish or another Catholic Association in the parish or sub-parish

Unhappy events include

  1. Supporting members when they lose their ones
  2. Supporting sick members of the association
  3. Support members in case of emergencies

The History of SPPADA

Founded in response to the spiritual needs of the Namugongo community, SPPADA emerged as a beacon of hope for Catholics in the area. Our inception was inspired by the values and teachings of St. John Paul II, emphasizing community, faith, and moral integrity. Over the years, SPPADA has established numerous programs and activities that not only support individual growth but also strengthen communal bonds, embodying our commitment to a vibrant Catholic life.
